Detroit
Gold Cup Unlimited Hydroplane Races - July 2001
Photo
by Robert F. Peters
After
4 grinding sessions on the aft step, we finally got the hull running much
better. But
we still encountered the dreaded "bow-steer" at speeds over 60 MPH.
Because we did
not want to grind any more, we thought the next step was another custom propeller. But
then the "sea-gods" spoke to us
???!!!

Disaster
- the front step/shingle ripped off. This photo is looking from the
bow, back
along where the front step used to be. The previous 10 year old epoxy bottom is still there,
but the
new front step just pulled off. That was it, the sea-gods had spoken, the
front step was not to be.

This
photo shows the front step removed, the previous epoxy/plywood bottom repaired, and
the first coat of penetrating epoxy applied.

The
glass cloth was applied with epoxy, from the stem to the back edge of the
revised front step. The front step now ends amid-ships, which looked like a much
improved design. But time was running out, the 2001 Wolfeboro Vintage Race Boat
Regatta was only days away.
