The Vintage Race Boats Return to Detroit !!!

First things first - special thanks to our APBA Vintage chairman for bringing our beloved vintage race boats back to the Detroit APBA Gold Cup - 2008 !!!

In addition to the spectacular Unlimited Hydroplanes, this is also a very large gathering of beautiful vintage race boats  - including 3-point hydroplanes, Jersey Speed Skiffs, Gold Cup fast steppers, and fire breathing grand prix hydros. The vintage boats will on display all weekend, and will also ran demonstration heats on the historic Detroit Gold Cup race course.

This year, we will again be located in the "Piston Park" area, close to the start/finish line, and the logistics will again be just superb - thanks to the event organizers. We will have lots of space,  3 cranes for just our vintage boats, and over 100 feet of good docking on the water. All the boats will be crane launched, and the docks will be so long that we will be able to pre-stage our vintage heats at the dock. The boats will all be released all at once - great fun and very dramatic - especially on heats with over 8 vintage boats ???!!!

And again this year our vintage boats will have TONS of water time - with lots of vintage heats on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Yup - we will a ball, with all the running time most of us can handle, and we will leave Detroit with empty tanks and very tired bodies !!!

The constant crane launching will also gave the spectators a chance to view and photograph the unique bottom designs, that illustrate the evolution of Gold Cup hulls.

And again the year, we will participte at fundraisers for both the historic Detroit Yacht Club and the grand Grosse Point Yacht Club.  These two clubs are THE major sponsors for our vintage race boats at the historic Gold Cup regatta again this year - and we very much appreciate their support.

2008 Gold Cup Registration Now Open - This year marks the 100th running of the APBA Gold Cup...and the APBA Vintage and Historic fleet is invited !!!

Because this is the 100th running, there are many on-water activities being scheduled by the race committee that will limit the running time available for Vintage boats. For this reason, plans are being made that make it possible for APBA Vintage and Historic boat owners to be an important part of the event, whether all boats get water time or not.

Specifically, current schedules indicate only J, H and Grand Prix class inboard hydroplanes and APBA Vintage Jersey Skiffs on the water Friday, Saturday or Sunday. The balance of the fleet will be prominently displayed in an area designated as "Mahogany Row", adjacent to the hot pits. This means more spetators will be able to see our boats up close and will give all of us the opportunity to make a lot of friends for the Vintage and Historic Division.

Is it possible that we can all get some water time?

Perhaps...but there are no guarantees. It is a long shot at best. We will have to see what the weekend brings. There will be a $100.00 entry fee for all boats. In exchange, each entrant will get four hot pit passes and preferred parking for all three days. Since you can't buy hot pit passes, there is no way to put a value on them. Based on the event's ticket price structure, 3-day cold pit passes cost $130.00--so it is obviously a very good deal...and it is opportunity to see the 100th running in a way very few people can.

Pre-registration is extremely important so that the organizers can identify the field of boats that will go onto the water and to map out the area which will be required for "Mahogany Row".

Please...send your letters of intent to me as soon as possible. The sooner we can assure the organizers of a good turnout of 7 liters/GP's and APBA Vintage Skiffs for on-water running and a good turn out of participants for Mahogany Row, the better for everyone.

Remit your letters of intent to schulteco@aol.com

Thanks...we should look forward to knocking them out in Detroit with Vintage and Historic's support for the 100th running of the Gold Cup.
